Most moms will spend between 24 and 72 hours in the hospital after delivering their baby. To be honest, there is not much that you need to bring, so it’s easy to overpack! The hospital should provide everything required to care for both recovering mom and newborn baby. But there are some things from home that the hospital just can’t replace. Here are the 7 essential items we packed in our labor bag.
1. Bedding and Blankets
Hospital bedding is notoriously uncomfortable. I have a theory that it is like that on purpose to encourage patients to get better quickly and not overstay. So we packed pillows and blankets from home to make things a little more comfortable.
2. Shower shoes
You do NOT want to put your bare feet on any part of the hospital floor. All kinds of body fluids and superbugs are in the hospital. Yes, they clean these rooms with industrial grade chemicals. But, I personally can’t touch a hospital surface without imagining all the possible “icks” that have been there before me. As such, shower shoes are definitely a must during your stay. And make sure to put those free hospital socks with the grippy bottoms to good use!
3. Hygiene items
Bringing your favorite scented shower products, toothpaste, and skincare products will keep you feeling refreshed and ready to take on the day.
4. Cozy hospital clothes
The hospital provides delivery gowns, but they are not the most comfortable. You are welcome to bring your own delivery gown with easily accessible buttons across the shoulders and back. I personally prefer dirtying the hospital delivery gown rather than my own. But after that, I can’t imagine a better feeling than being clean and in my own cozy pajamas. Soft, loose fabrics that provide easy access for breastfeeding are ideal.
5. Phone & charger
Your hospital stay will be so busy it can feel like it passes all too quickly. There will be periods of intense focus and periods of rest. You may want to have your phone available during those downtimes to read a good book, text loved ones, and photograph memories. Just don’t forget the charger. Having that phone die in the middle of taking newborn photos would be frustrating!
6. Newborn photo outfit
Speaking of newborn photos. Newborn baby pictures are fun! Whether you hire a professional to take your photos or take them yourself, you’ll want to pack a cute newborn outfit. Remember to bring any adorable blankys, swaddles, or signs with you!
7. Going home clothes!
Before you know it, you’ll be on your way home. Make sure to pack comfortable clothes for everyone to go home in! If its cold, make sure to bring enough layers for baby. And if it’s summertime, make sure to send dad down in advance to cool down the car before strapping baby in.
Now that mom and baby are all packed and ready, remember to have your support person’s bag packed with these essentials too!
